Day two was just as good as day one for me at the ASHP Meeting and Exhibition. I had another day of great conversations with many different pharmacy professionals from all over the country.
While I continued to have conversations about the importance of IV automation today (as I mentioned in yesterday’s blog), the focus of today, for me, seemed to be centered around buying oral solid medications in bulk and repacking them versus using manufacturer “package-ready” medications. While there can be benefits to both, my team and I feel very strongly that there are two distinct advantages that stand out with regard to using pre-packaged unit dose oral solids.
1. There is nothing safer than using the bar code that comes directly from the manufacturer.
2. By using manufacturer bar-coded packages, you eliminate the need for a pharmacist QA check for packaging—and can move those pharmacist hours into more valued-added roles.
Of course there are different acquisition costs associated with choosing pre-packaged versus bulk, and one may fare better for you than the other. But if you are evaluating your options, it’s critically important that you factor pharmacist labor into your equation, whether you purchase packaging equipment or outsource packaging resources.
I’m excited to announce that Somerset Hospital in Somerset, PA went live today with our PROmanager-Rx solution. They chose to fully automate the dispensing and restocking of manufacturer “package-ready” oral solid meds because it will automate about 80 percent of their daily cart fill, easily fits into their pharmacy layout, and it is affordable. And according to Jonathan Bauer, CIO at Somerset Hospital, “PROmanager-Rx closes critical safety gaps in the medication dispensing process.”
In my conversations with customers today, many of them validated our beliefs even further about pre-packaged medications as well as the direction we have taken with our PROmanager-Rx product. One DOP mentioned to me that he is extremely interested in getting his pharmacists out on the floor even more (right now they are at 70%, and his goal is 80+%). And he sees taking packaging out of the picture as the solution.
It’s been another very fulfilling day for me at the ASHP meeting. I’m really looking forward to see what’s ahead during day three.
