Cut Costs and Build Safety with EnterpriseRx

Cut Costs and Build Safety with EnterpriseRx

In the outpatient pharmacy, patient safety requires consistency, accountability and extraordinary precision. Knowing this, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) called on McKesson’s technological expertise to leverage their enterprise-wide pharmacy management system. MGH’s 17 pharmacists and 25 technicians fill as many as 1,450 prescriptions daily, but its four outpatient pharmacies were not using either the same or the latest technology.

McKesson’s EnterpriseRx united the pharmacies with a new, easy to operate system that streamlines prescription fulfillment and verification. As a result, patient safety is enhanced, inventory is reduced and a significant amount of time is saved for patients and staff. In the first year alone an estimated $200,000 was saved with improved inventory controls and tracking.

The features and benefits of the EnterpriseRx system are many: Bar-code scanning ensures the correct product before a label is generated; pill imaging enables staff to verify the contents of the patient’s bottle against an onscreen image of the prescribed pill, reducing error; and, prescription scanning provides pharmacists with data for verifying drug utilization which is especially useful during audits.

World-class patient care depends on continuous improvement. While MGH is very pleased with its new system thus far, McKesson builds room for growth and change into EnterpriseRx with next generation technology. Today, thanks to enhanced reporting tools, MGH is generating customized reports that better meet the needs of their esteemed hospital. And, MGH is in the early stages of a new Web site scheduled for 2011. The ability to securely order refill prescriptions with just a few clicks will be a reality for their patients in the near future.
